  • What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction's purpose is to help you discern God's presence and purpose in the midst of your struggles and questions. It is a prayerful, conversational way of looking at one's life as the raw material for discerning the presence of God.

  • What does a spiritual director do?

A spiritual director is a trained listener, someone who cares about hearing your story. They offer a safe space to honestly explore your spiritual questions and to deepen your relationship with God. The term “director” is a bit of a misnomer, as the spiritual director does not direct, so much as help the other notice those indicators of God's real and active presence and movement. The Holy Spirit is our director.

  • How is this different from counseling or mentoring?

Spiritual direction is not problem centered like counseling, not skill centered like mentoring, and not issue centered like coaching.

While similar to these disciplines, spiritual direction centers explicitly on one's relationship with God, with the goal of awakening and strengthening that relationship.

  • Where and how would we meet?

At this time I am offering individual spiritual directions sessions - either virtually or in person in my office in Brooklyn Park. Sessions are usually an hour in length and are scheduled once a month, although frequency is completely up to you.

  • What would our sessions look like?

In a spiritual direction session, you, the directee, sets the pace. I will not come in with any agenda or “program” to present to you. Our first session often consists of prayer, perhaps reading scripture and then possibly discussing your faith journey and history. Sometimes that can feel overwhelming and folks don’t know where to start. That’s OK! There is no right or wrong way to do this. This is meant to be a time and space that we are setting aside to seek the Lord. Sometimes there may be a lot of silence, sometimes there may be a lot of talking.
